You can write an expression with a variable in many different ways. First it all depends on what the word problem says.
For Example : *Three times a number increased by four is less than eight.
The answer would be 3x+4<8 or it could be written as 8>4+3x it will equal to the same amount.
It doesn't matter what variable you use if it doesn't have an amount. Because all variables equal to 1, you can use any letter.
