So 5*8 = 5*(4*2) which, by the associative property, = (5*4)*2

= 20*2

Can you do 20*2 more easily than 5*8?

If not, you need another round of associate property.

20 = 10*2

So 20*2 = (10*2)*2 = 10*(2*2) = 10*4

And if you cannot do 10*4 then this question is beyond you anyway and knowing 5*4 is not going to help.
