a 12 inch tile is 12 in x 12 in = 1 ft x 1 ft = 1 square foot.

5 ft 6 in = 5.5 ft, and 5 ft 8 in = 5 2/3 ft,

so 5.5 * (5 2/3) = (31 1/6) square feet, so you would think 32 tiles should be enough.

For the 5.5 dimension, you will use 5 full tiles and 1/2 tile for each row.

If you cut the tile in half, there will be a little waste, but maybe you can get by with that or not.

You will have 5 2/3 rows, but that extra 1/3 cannot be used elsewhere, so you have 6 rows of 5 1/2 = 33 tiles, or if you need extra on cutting the 1/2 tiles:

6 rows of 6 tiles = 36 tiles. You did not say if the tiles were spaced with grout or butt up next to each other, but 36 will be enough.
