Bagged soil is usually pretty wet, so you're paying for water, to a certain extent. Moist topsoil weighs about 90 pounds per cubic foot, so a 40-pound bag is less than half a cubic foot -- 0.44 cubic foot, to be more exact.So, you're going to need about 34 bags -- FOR EVERY INCH OF DEPTH !! -- to cover the area. If the dirt isn't too wet, you might get away with 30 bags per inch of depth.**Actually a 40lbs bag is closer to .75cf. **

Depends on the depth of the gravel also. If depth is "D" feet then volume required is 62 x D cubic feet. Since each bag has 5 cubic feet you would need (60 x D)/5 bags (round it up to next higher number (as most shops won't sell you fractions of a bag).
