Obviously this depends on foot size, so we need a standard. The roman soldiers had a standard where 1 step (left foot to left foot) was just over 5'. Every thousand (or "mille" as it is in Latin), they would mark the point with a post. To this day they are called "miles". So 1 mile = 1000 x 2 footsteps = 2,000 footsteps
