There will be 45 handshakes (assuming that each person doesn't repeat who they shake hands with).

Use the following formula for this one (n*(n-1))/2 where n is number of people...so if 10 people its (10 x 9) / 2 = 45 handshakes, if 7 people its (7 x 6) / 2 = 21 handshakes etc.

If every person at a party shakes the hand of every other person and there were 105 handshakes in all How many persons were present at the party?

The answer is 15 people. Each shook hands with 14 others, and there are half that many handshakes (pairs). The total number of pairs (distinct handshakes) within the group is defined by the formula T = [n!/(n-2)!] /2 Given T = 105 we get n!/(n-2)!=210 which implies n(n-1)=210 on solving we get n=15

Each speaker at the conference will be allotted 15 minutes to present their talk.Only a few states allot electoral votes in proportion to popular votes."Allot" is related to the words "allow" and "allocate". Be careful not to confuse it with the soundalike term "a lot" (often misspelled as "alot") which means "many" or "a large number".

In a party there are women and catsThere are 18 heads and 72 legs altogether How many women and cats?

18 entities had 72 legs so the average number of legs was 72/18 = 4. Since none of those present had more than 4 legs, the average could be four only if none had fewer than four legs. It follows that there were 0 women and 18 cats.
