Remember in 1 kilometre there are 1000 metres.

So in 4 kilometres there are 4 x 1000 = 4000 m

In half a kilometre (0.5) there are 1000/2 = 500 metres.

So in 4.5 kilometres there are 4000 + 500 = 4500 metres.
