If you describe a table as being 6 foot, that would normally mean that it is 6 feet long, and rectangular in shape rather than round. Only round tables have a diameter. The term doesn't apply to rectuangular tables.

ADVANTAGES- having a round table is good everyone is equal and you dont have to worry about who is at the head or foot. DISADVANTAGES- not as many people fit at a round table, more fit at a squared or rectangular.
For a 9 foot table you should get a 10 foot table runner. This will allow a portion of the runner to hang off each side, as it should.

The newer homes can support a pool table without any special considerations. For an 8 or 9 foot table, the per square foot weight distribution is less than having people occupying the same space.
