Apparently, Decarte (the guy who discovered it) was lazy, and decided to just lay in bed when he woke up. He ended up watching a fly walk around his ceiling. He noticed its movement was in accordance with two axis, the x and y axis. He had a eureka moment, and got out of bed and started writing the Appendix on Geometry, his book about the coordinate plane.
The coordinate plane is sometimes call the Cartesian plane because Rene Descartes is often credited with inventing the coordinate plane and so the coordinate plane is sometimes called the Cartesian plane,in his honor.
The cartesian coordinates are plotted on the cartesian plane
The Cartesian Coordinate System was discovered by Rene Descartes.
A coordinate plane is sometimes called Cartesian plane in honor of René Descartes. YOU ARE AN IDIOT

another name for a coordinate plane is Cartesian plane.

The 'abscissa' is the x coordinate on the Cartesian plane and the 'ordinate' is the y coordinate on the Cartesian plane

The Cartesian or coordinate plane.
The x-coordinate is the horizontal part of what is known as the cartesian plane, which is the 2D representation of dimensioning. This is a cartesian plane: /\ <------------- that's an arrow, which means it extends indefinitely. | | | <-----------|----------> X ( this is the x coordinate, the horizontal part of the cartesian plane) | | | V Y (This is the y coordinate, the vertical part) jhj
