M=1000, D=500, C=100, L=50, X=10, V=5, I=1

If a horizontal bar or line was placed above a numeral it indicated that the numeral was to be multiplied by a thousand.

For example the numeral M with a line above it was equal to a 1,000,000.

If a horizontal line was placed above a numeral and vertical a line placed each side of that numeral it meant multiplication by a hundred thousand.

For example the numeral V with a line above it and each side of it was equal to 500,000.
