Because of changes made to the original rules governing the Roman numeral system, introduced during the Middle Ages, nowadays 1999 and 2014 when converted into Roman numerals are officially MCMXCIX and MMXIV respectively which doesn't seem to make sense because it's almost impossible to add them together in some kind of logical mathematical progression.
However, notwithstanding the aforementioned inasmuch that there exist credible historical evidence to suggest that the ancient Romans would have calculated the equivalent of 1999 and 2014 on an abacus beaded counting device in either of the following formats:-
Elongated version:
MDCCCCLXXXXVIIII+MMXIIII= MMMMXIII => 1999+2014 = 4013
Abridged version:
IMM+IMMXV = MMMMXIII => (2000-1)+(2015-1) = 4013
Note: MMMMXIII can be abridged to (IV)XIII => (1000*4)+13 = 4013
Note: M=1000 D=500 C=100 L=50 X=10 V=5 I=1 and S=0.5
Note: In the reference book 'History of Mathematics' by David Eugene Smith first published in 1925 and ISBN 0486 204 308 the Roman numerals of LXXXVIIIIS (89.5) are abridged to SXC (100-10.5 = 89.5)
