Notwithstanding todays modern rules now governing the Roman numeral system inasmuch that the ancient Romans would in all probability have notated the equivalent of 1 to 2000 as follows:-

Units: I II III IIII V VI VII VIII and VIIII

Tens: X XX XXX XXXX L LX LXX LXXX and LXXXX

Hundreds: C CC CCC CCCC D DC DCC DCCC and DCCCC

Thousands: M and MM

To select the equivalent of any number simply write out the numerals in descending order as in the following examples:-

1776 = MDCCLXXVI

9 = VIIII which can be abridged to IX

99 = LXXXXVIIII which can be abridged to IC

1666 = MDCLXVI

1999 = MDCCCCLXXXXVIIII which can be abridged to IMM
