Roman numerals were once notated in ancient times as follows:-
Units: I II III IIII V VI VII VIII and VIIII
Tens: X XX XXX XXXX L LX LXX LXXX and LXXXX
Hundreds: C CC CCC CCCC D DC DCC DCCC and DCCCC
Thousands: M and MM
To select any numerals from 1 to 2000 simply write them out in descending order as in the following examples:-
19 = XVIIII which can be abridged to IXX
199 = CLXXXXVIIII which can be abridged to ICC
1999 = MDCCCCLXXXXVIIII which can be abridged to IMM
So: IXX+ICC+IMM = MMCCXVII => (20-1)+(200-1)+(2000-1) = 2217
Note that if we were to add them together in their unabridged format the result would be exactly the same.
Roman numerals are now notated in modern times as follows:-
Units: I II III IV V VI VII VIII and IX
Tens: X XX XXX XL L LX LXX LXXX and XC
Hundreds: C CC CCC CD D DC DCC DCCC and CM
Thousands: M and MM
To select any number from 1 to 2000 simply write them out in descending order as in the following examples:-
19 = XIX remains the same
199 = CXCIX remains the same
1999 = MCMXCIX remains the same
So: XIX+CXCIX+MCMXCIX = total confusion
