∙ 14y agoI don't understand why there are so many questions which seem to show no understanding of the difference between square feet, a measure of area, and linear feet, a measure of length. The deck has an area of 304 square feet.

20 linear feet would be "length", 3 feet would be width. To get square feet, multiply length by width.
[(Linear feet x 12) / 16] + 1 is the formula.

You can't, they are incompatible units. 16 foot x 16 foot = 256 square foot
16 foot x 16 foot deck would be 256 square feet.
16 feet are 16 feet, with or without the unnecessary word "linear".Linear feet (often called Lineal feet) are the same as regular feet.No conversion is necessary. If something is 6 linear feet tall, it is 6 feet tall.
Square feet is a measure of area and linear is a measure of length. There is no conversion between the two.
A 15 by 16 foot rug would have perimeter of (15+15+16+16) = 62 feet. To convert to linear feet, you would double the perimeter (that is, consider both sides of the rug) so a 15 by 16 foot rug is equivalent to 124 linear feet.

24 feet.
A lineal or linear foot is the same as a foot so a 16 feet diameter is the same as a diameter of 16 lineal feet.

Hi Your question doesn't make sense as it is written. To calculate square feet you need two dimensions. So 2 feet multiplied by 8 feet would give you 16 square feet. So would 4 feet multiplied by 4 feet. They are the same square footage, but different shapes. Think if you were adding a deck on your house and wanted to know how much paint to buy for it. If your deck is 10 feet by 16 feet, then 10 x 16 = 160 square feet. Then you look on the paint can and it says (conveniently) one can will cover 160 square feet. Phil
