12 is a composite number. A prime number is a number with two and only two factors: 1 (also known as unity) and itself. A composite number is a number with more than two factors; in other words, it has at least one factor besides 1 and itself. Since 12 is an even number, it is also divisible by 2, which means it has more than two factors, which in turn means it is a composite number.

12 is composite because it can be divided. 12 divided by 2 is six. Six is composite, so it would be divided also. Six divided by 2 is 3. Three is prime meaning it can't be divided.
