A ship's passenger list is considered an original source. It is a primary document created at the time of a voyage that records the names and details of individuals traveling on the ship. The term is actually 'cargo hold' and is used for ships and aircraft for holding cargo, typically below decks. Cargo ships, however, generally carry all cargo in huge steel containers above deck and passenger ships' cargo is people, which are appointed cabins throughout the vessel.
