Well a space is defined by one or more dimensions . There are an unlimited amount of dimensions. According to this, you could represent a space with any of these units mentioned, depending on how many dimensions make up the space.

For example, if we are describing a scenario where we are tiling a floor (area), we would use a squared unit (square feet), as the floor has two dimensions (length and width).

An alternative scenario would be the amount of space inside of a box (volume). In this case we have three dimensions, which include length, width, height. As such, a cubed unit would be used (cubed feet).

A space that is represented with one dimension could be seen as a distance. As an example, the distance between the tv and the couch. In this case a simple unit is used (just feet).
