To work out the area of a rectangle you simply multiply the width by the length:

Here the width and length are 7 and 8 so by multiplying them together you get:

56

Remember, that if units are involved such as centimetres, you must write a squared sign after the digits. For example if it were 7cm and 8cm, you would write the answer as 56cm2
