Casually, an irrational number is one that recurs to infinity, AND there is NO regular order in the decimal digits. e.g. pi = 3.141592..... but pi ~ 3.14, or 3.1416, or 22/7 ( these are only approximations (~)). However, 3.33333... is RATIONAL because, whilst the decimals go to infinity, they are are in a regular order of '3'.
