technically, a rational number is any number that can be written as a fraction, as in a/b where a and b are both integers. so, seven eights, being a fraction, is, obviously, a rational number. An irrational number is any number that cannot be written as a fraction, such as pi. Remember repeating decimals are rational because they can be written as fractions (1/3).

(integer is any whole number and its opposites: ...-5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... )
