On a ships propeller shaft, the thrust will be in line with the axis of the shaft.

The shaft is suppose to eliminate what you call torque steer, It comes straight from the tranny and bolts to the engine block with a bearing race to hold the shaft and at that brace is where the half shaft, or drive shaft connects to the intermediate shaft and to the driver side hub.

If you mean dripping out of the of the tranny where the shaft slips in then the leaking is it
The crank sensor on a 2001 Malibu is located on the bottom of the engine near the crank shaft. It monitors the rotation and speed of the crank shaft.
Most likely, it's the noise resonating along the driveshaft from slop in the rear end gear, u-joints or trans output shaft.

Drop the tranny. I replaced a clutch on an '89 Ford 4*4. There is a lot less to undo & do-up on a tranny. Just get some help & a few jacks, drop the drive shaft, and then drop the tranny. Line up your new clutch and use 3 or 4 jacks to raise your tranny evenly twist the shaft till she lines up, give her a shove and bang, put your tranny bolts in, drive shaft, you're on the road or mud. Does your Firebird have a Chevy or Pontiac motor in it?If it is a Pontiac motor, you will need an adapter from Summit or Jeg's.Also, it could be a different output shaft length and spline count.
