Lines that are in different planes and never intersect could be skew lines. Think about it this way: If the lines are going in different directions (e.g., one's vertical and the other is slanted or horizontal), but they're never going to intersect, then they're skew, not parallel.

Picture a cardboard box: pick two edges of the box. These edges either intersect (meet at a corner), are parallel (the edges that are "traveling" in the same direction), or are skew (don't meet either of the previous two conditions--pick a horizontal edge and a vertical edge that don't touch each other).
