The 1997 Pontiac Transport has 2 different alternators . One is 105 amps and the second is 140 amps. It will depend on the power equipment you have on your vehicle. You may want to get an AVR test to make sure that it is the alternator before changing it. That test is about $30.00. Good luck

The odd numbered cylinders are next to the firewall, and the even numbered cylinders are next to the radiator. Number one is at the front ( pulley end ) of the engine. Standing at the front of the vehicle looking into the engine compartment, the front of the engine is on your left. Therefore that puts the number one cylinder on your left near the firewall.
