The two books known as The First Epistle of Peter (1 Peter) and The Second Epistle of Peter (2 Peter) are traditionally attributed to Simon Peter. However, biblical scholars say that both books were actually written in the second century, by two different anonymous authors.

We do not know the author's actual name, but 2 Peterincorporates almost all of Jude. The Second Epistle of Peter was attributed to Peter the apostle, but it is clear that it was really written during the second century, long after Peter would have died.
It was once thought that the apostle Peter wrote the two epistles known as First Peter and Second Peter. It was also suggested that Mark wrote the gospel that now bears his name, based on the memoirs of Peter. Most scholars now accept that Peter did not write First Peter and Second Peter. It is also accepted that Mark was unlikely to have been the author of Mark's Gospel, which was originally anonymous and which was not written until approximately 70 CE. So the position now is that Saint Peter made no contribution to writing the New Testament.
Books considered to have been written in the second century include: Acts of the Apostles, John's Gospel, 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus, 1 Peter, 2 Peter, Jude and Revelation. Luke's Gospel may have been written quite early in the second century. There is no clear consensus on which book was written last, but 2 Peter is clearly later than 1 Peter and Jude, and was probably written by 130 CE, or a little later.

Two letters, or epistles, are attributed to the apostle Peter. Second Peter is considered clearly to have been written around the middle of the second century, but scholars are more uncertain when the epistle known as First Peter was written. Both epistles are regarded as pseudepigraphical.
It is clear from the context of the material that both 1 Peter and 2 Peter were written during the second century. Further evidence of the late date of 2 Peter is that it incorporates, as a block, almost all of the Epistle of Jude, clearly a second century composition.
