Yes, it was rather embarrasing for India to have this kind of statistic. However the blame should be put on the government. The Indian government has not done enough to develop sports in India. Look at China, the government is aware of the importance of sports and carry out carefully and properly planned programs for their athletes. Potential athletes were scouted from all over the country and sent for intensive training at young age. That's why China is emergiing as the new sporting power. If the government of India had done as what China has been doing, India too would have won many medals because with such a big pool of population, there are certainly many talented people around. It is just that they were not given full support to nurture their talents.
