You can figure it out using any numbers to set it up, but let's use 20 girls and 10 boys as the simplest. So 10 girls and 8 boys have finished for a total of 18, which leaves 12 still working on it. 12/30 is 6/15ths which is 2/5ths which is the same as 40%.
