a+b = 30 and ab = 48 then by substitutiuon

a(30-a) = 48

a2 - 30a + 48 = 0

use the quadratic formula

a = (30 +/- sq rt(900 - 192))/2

a = 15 +/- sqrt (177)

so the 2 numbers are (15 + sqrt 177) and (15 - sqrt 177)
