It is dividing the dividend by the divisor until

  • there is no remainder; or
  • the digits in the quotient start repeating; or
  • you have reached a satisfactory degree of accuracy.

The last bullet is because some fractions will not start repeating for a long time. Most primes will take as many digits as the prime itself: for example, 1/29 has a repeating string which is 29-digits long.
