The nervous system is divided into two main parts: the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The brain uses about 20% of the body's oxygen and blood supply, despite making up only about 2% of the body's weight. Neurons in the nervous system can transmit signals at speeds of up to 120 meters per second. The average adult human brain contains around 86 billion neurons. The spinal cord acts as a relay station for signals between the brain and the rest of the body. The myelin sheath, made of fatty tissue, helps to speed up the transmission of signals along neurons. The enteric nervous system, often called the "second brain," controls the gastrointestinal system independently of the brain. The nervous system controls involuntary functions like heart rate, breathing, and digestion. Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that transmit signals between neurons. The nervous system is essential for coordinating all bodily functions and responses to the external environment.
