Its most obvious advantage is its proximity to the United States -- Arizona, to be more specific. This results in increased commerce with the US, and tourists visiting Sonora's resort cities such as Puerto Peñasco. The state is also rich in Natural Resources, especially fisheries on the Gulf of California, grasslands on the western side of the state that allow livestock rising and mineral resources found along the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range.

Its largest disadvantages include the arid climate to the north of the state (the Sonoran desert), and a relatively small population of 2.66 million inhabitants. Also during recent years, the War on Drugs (2006-present) has taken its toll on the Sonoran economy, including less tourism and investment.
