A "rational" number is anything that can be expressed as a ratio, or fraction. So 0.5 is "rational", because it is the fraction 1/2. "Irrational" numbers can't be expressed as a fraction; for example, the irrational number "pi", which is APPROXIMATELY equal to 3.1416.
