According to Stanley Smith Stevens, the four levels of measurement are:

  • nominal - for example counting balls of different colors
  • ordinal - where the measured values have an order - for example small, medium, large
  • interval - where a distance is defined between the measured values - for example, Celsius temperature
  • ratio - where we can divide values and get a meaningful answer - for example length and weight

the 4 types of measurements are mass, volume, distance, and temperature

There are 8 basic units of measurement in the International System of Units.

  1. Length with a unit of metres, m
  2. Mass with a unit of kilograms, kg
  3. Luminosity with a unit of Candela
  4. Time with a unit of seconds, s
  5. Electrical current with a unit of Amperes, Amp
  6. Temperature with a unit of Kelvin, K
  7. Amount with a unit of moles, mol
  8. Volume with a unit of liter, L

We can use other units by converting these units to other systems eg Celsius = Kelvin - 273

Volume is a derived unit eg length cubed
