Add a 0 onto 100, or add 2 0's onto 10.

Multiply by 10 = add a 0

Multiply by 100= add 00

Multiply by 1000 = add 00

Teachers prefere not to say 'add a 0'. This is like a cheat, and does not work for decimals.

How many tenths are there in 10?

To find this number we divide 10 by (1/10). This is equivalent to multiplying by the reciprocal of 1/10 which is 10. So, 10 / (1/10) = 10 * 10 = 100. Thus there are 100 tenths in 10.

Why is 100 x 0.1 equals 10 without using the rule of moving the decimals?

You what to understand that 0.1 = 1/10 so you really have.. 100* 1/10 = 100/10 which clearly equals 10 You must not understand the "rules of decimals" yet. Look things over more carefully. For me the rules of decimals says that when you have multiplication, if you move one decimal to the right you must move another decimal to the left by the same amount In your example.. 100 x 0.1 =10 It works because 100 = 100.0 Note when you move a decimal to the right you are effectively multiplying the number by 10, for example... 23.3 x 10 = 233.0 When you move it to the left you are dividing it by 10.... 23.3 /10 = 23.3 ÷ 10 =2.33

Why does moving the decimal point in the divisor and the dividend when dividing by a decimal work?

Moving the decimal point one place to the right is the same as multiplying both, he numerator and the denominator by 10. That is, you are effectively multiplying by 10/10 which equals 1. And since multiplication by 1 does not change the result, it is OK to do that. Similarly, moving two palces to the right is multiplying by 100/100. Similarly moving left.
