A binary operator is a mathematical operator that performs some operation (eg addition, multiplication) on two operands to produce a result. Associativity is the property of some binary operators whereby, if there is a sequence of such operations, the order in which the operations are carried out does not matter. However, the order of the operands may affect the result.

For example, (a + b) + c = a + (b + c) and so we may write them simply as a + b + c.
