I'm assuming that you are referring to IV which is roman numerals for 4 (1 before 5 WHICH IS V)
I = 1
V = 5
X = 10
count up in 1s until it uses less digits to count back from the next 'big' number
I = 1
II = 2
III = 3
IV = 4 if the I is before the V it means count back
V = 5
VI = 6
VII = 7
VIII = 8
IX = 9
X = 10
