Because nature is full of uncertainties, any observation could potentially be due to random chance. The purpose of statistics is basically to calculate the likelihood of an observation caused by chance rather than the hypothesized mechanism. This is best achieved by gathering as many data as possible (and as randomly as possible) for a question of interest, and it is the statistician's job to rule out the possibility of an observed pattern being the result of chance.
