For example, to write the equation of a line, you use the formula y=mx+b. each of the different letters represents a different aspect of the line (slope, y-intercept, etc...). Another example would be the area of a rectangle. BxH=A. B represents the lenghth of the Base, and H represents the Height, and A represents the Area.
