Bogotá, capital of Colombia in South America, is derived from the name Bacatá, once chief of the pre-Columbian Chibcha indigenous tribe in the region. The name Bogotá was the interpreted name by Spanish explorer, Jiménez de Quesada, when founding the city in 1538. To honor the the Chibcha chief, the capital city was established as Sante Fe de Bogotá.
