The distributive property is usually used with multiplication versus addition. It is what lets you open parenthesis in many expressions. This is best explained by an example. The formula is: a(b+c) = ab+ac; as an example, 5(10+2) is the same as 5x10 + 5x2. This is, in fact, the property that lets us multiply multiple-digit numbers (since in the above example, 10+2 is simply 12).
