The inch is the English (imperial) unit for distance. In math, the inch is considered a unit, which means you need to keep your units compatible throughout your problem (e.i. 1kg + 1g doesn't equal 2g it equals 1,001g) and make sure you end up with the right units in your answer (i.e. 20mph x 20 hours doesn't equal 400mpg it equals 400 miles).
