While I'm not 100% sure of what it means due to the lack of research on this subject, it is actually common in people. Everybody is able to mentally visualize to an extent, some more than others.

I cannot mentally visualize very extensive when it comes to pictures, but sound, smell, touch, and taste are very easily imaginable to me. I've been having blurry vision my whole life (14 years), and just found out last year. I think it may have something to do with that because after getting glasses I could see everything in a much better, clearer, and understandable way. I am able to imagine just about anything very vividly before going to sleep, and while dreaming.

So, sadly I cannot answer this question, but I hope I have provided some knowledge on this topic to any readers who come across this.
