In certain formulas, including most that involve circles, you will see 'pi'.

This pi always has the same value, approximately 3.14159...

However, this number is irrational, which means it never terminates (ends) or repeats.

But what exactly is pi? Pi is the ratio between any circle's circumference and its diameter. This ratio is always the same, no matter how big or small the circle is, but the degree of precision might vary depending on how big the circle is.

Why is Pi useful?

Pi allows us to calculate the diameter or area of any circle, but also has many other uses.

In order to use these formulas, though, we need to define the terms we are using.

Circumference - the distance around the circle

Diameter - the length of a straight line segment that passes through the center of the circle

Radius - the distance from the center of the circle to the circle itself

To calculate the circumference, multiply the diameter by pi (3.14...)

To calculate the area, square the radius, then multiply this by pi (3.14...)

In symbols:

Circumference = diameter x pi

Area = (radius)2 x pi

Hope this helped.
