By tradition , one standard equation for a line is denoted by y = mx + b.

Here m stands for the slope of the line and b is the Y-intercept, the place where

the line crosses the Y-axis. I do not know why m stands for slope.

M often is used for a set, the reason being that Menge means set in German.
