In all similar problems, you should bring the constant all to one side.
You should show these steps in your work, to remember it easier:
1. -3y-3=9- original polynomial
2. -3y=9-(-3)=9+3- you can split this up into two steps
3. -3y=12
4. y=12/-3
5. y=-4-final answer
