0.786 to 2 decimal places is 0.79. When rounding a number to two decimal places, we look at the third decimal place. If it is 5 or greater, we round up the second decimal place. In this case, the third decimal place is 6, so we round up 0.78 to 0.79.

for 2 d.p., firstly count the first two digits after the full stop, then look at the third. If the third place is equal to or greater than 5 then raise the second by 1, otherwise it stays the same.

The reasoning behind this is that it gives the closest reasonable result with a shorter number. For example, if you had $17.23 and somebody asked you how much you had, you would probably say "about $17, similarly for $43.78 you would likely say $44
