XII.X.LXXXVIII (88) or XII.X.IIXC (100-12) Conventionally accept wisdom tells us that Roman numerals read from left to right and always start with the highest value numeral. X is 10 and XII equals 12. 88 is conventionally writen as LXXXVIII (50 + 30 + 5 +3) but the proposed alternative of writing it as IIXC is totally incorrect in that it places an I (1) before C (1000). Also according to the website Algebra.com... no repeated lower numeral should ever be placed in front of a numeral of higher value so II should never preceed X.
