1 1/4 + 2 5/6 = 4 1/12

You need to convert the fractions to a common denominator so that they can be added.

As you have mixed numbers, you can either add the whole numbers, then add the fractions and correct the answer if the result of adding the fractions is an improper fraction; or convert the mixed numbers to improper fractions, add them, and convert the final improper fraction back to a mixed number.

I personally prefer the second method:

1 1/4 = 5/4

2 5/6 = 17/6

LCM of 4 and 6 is 12, so convert the fractions to equivalent fractions with denominator 12:

5/4 = 15/12

17/6 = 34/12

Can now add, and convert back to a mixed number:

15/12 + 34/12 = 49/12

= 4 1/12
