1/2 and 1/8 have different denominators. If I (or you) were to change 1/2 into 4/8, which I (or you) can do because 4/8 is a half and a half is 1/2. Basically 4/8=1/2. But if we change 1/2 to 4/8 and left 1/8 as 1/8, they would both be like fractions.

1/8 + 1/2 = 5/8

My initial response was "An eighth what... ounce, pound kilo" but the better reply is that you really need to bone up on your math fractions. 1/8 divided by 1/2 = 1/(8 * 2) = 1/16 (1/8 div 2 = 1/8 div 2/1 = 1/8 * 1/2 = 1/16 ) I suspect the questioner really wanted the answer to "How many grams equals one half of an eighth ounce." Most pedestrian drug users know that an eight-ball (eighth ounce) weighs 3.5 grams and a half eight-ball is a teener weighing 1.75 grams. P.s. A half eighth of weed will always be half of an eighth of an ounce of weed.
Yes, One half of a fourth is one eighth. A fourth of a half is one eighth aswell.

If you know fractions, that should be a walk in the park. 4/8 = 1/2 when reduced. This means that four eighth notes is equal to one half.
1/8 + 1/2 = 5/8
A quarter, an eighth and a third are pretty common in every day life
