When we are asked to round something to 'the nearest' unit of measurement we drop the part of the number which follows the decimal point.

Most usually this means that anything equal to .5 or greater is rounded upwards to the next whole number, and anything less than .5 is rounded downwards

In your case, 3.4 kg becomes 3 kg

3.5 (and anything greater) would become 4.
