You need to rearrange the formula, to make x the subject, because that is what you need to find

So the question is 'What is 3x+(-8) = -29'

ok

We know that when we add -ive signs with +ive signs, (e.g. 3+-4) we get a -ive sign, (e.g. 3-4)

So 3x-8 = -29

Now we can rearrange the formula, leave the '3x' where it is, and move the '-8' to the '-29' 3x = -29 +8

Now the '-8' will become '+8', because when arranging the formula, and you want to get a constant the subject, then you change the signs

Now you add 8 to -29, 3x = -21

Now to get the x on its own, we divide both sides by 3

x = -21/3

Now we have x = -21/3, which is:

x = -7

So 3*x+(-8) = -29
